Wi-Fi Troubleshooting Tips

Wi-Fi Troubleshooting Tips for a Stronger Home Connection

Nothing’s more frustrating than a spotty Wi-Fi connection—especially if you work from home, stream media, or rely on smart devices. As a local tech support service in San Francisco, we often get called for Wi-Fi troubleshooting. Here's what we tell clients to try first.

1. Restart Your Modem and Router

Unplug both for 30 seconds, then plug them back in. It sounds simple, but this refreshes the network and clears out bugs.

2. Move Your Router to a Better Spot

Avoid placing your router near thick walls, metal appliances, or behind furniture. For better signal, put it in a central, elevated location.

3. Check for Network Interference

Microwaves, cordless phones, and even baby monitors can interfere with Wi-Fi. Try turning off these devices if your connection drops frequently.

4. Switch Wi-Fi Channels

Most routers broadcast on the same few default channels. You can log into your router’s settings and switch to a less crowded one to reduce interference.

5. Update Your Router Firmware

Manufacturers often release updates to fix bugs and security holes. Go to your router brand’s website for instructions.
